Low Country Produce Market & Cafe, Beaufort, South Carolina — 1950’s era ambiance, 21st century food

Low Country Produce Market & Cafe

Take a walk around picturesque and historic downtown Beaufort, South Carolina, and you’re bound to run into the Low Country Produce Market & Cafe. You can’t miss it — it’s an old Federal building — the former U.S. Post Office.

This place not a full-scale food market. It’s a soup, salad and sandwich shop, and a very good one at that, smack-dab in the heart of town, not far from the Harbor River waterfront and the adjoining Woods Memorial Bridge (highway 21) spanning the river.

An Old Post Office Building

It’s a somewhat majestic, if not slightly incongruous place, for a café. But once you step inside, you’ll grasp the faux 1950’s era country store like atmosphere and find yourself right at home, just like some of you may remember back in the day.

A green and white color scheme abounds throughout, applied as if this building is again repurposed for an industrial use.  Display racks present local seller’s products — a nice touch for the traveler. And this place is squeaky-clean — a suitable touch given the open spaces and color scheme.

And yes, you can tell this is a former U.S. Post Office. The vault door is prominent in the dining area!

A Soup, Salad and Sandwich Menu (and yes, more)

The menu cites she crab soup as a daily appetizer — a must for a seacoast town — and an optional soup the day. Depression soup (potato) is one of our favorites, and thus, our choice.

Salads are fresh and tasty.  Our choices: Steak and the classic salad.  We’ve tried the BLT and Po’boy sandwiches during previous visits and they were scrumptious.

When you visit a place like this, you just have to try the desserts. Key lime and a chocolate Graham cracker like pie were our choices — also very good.
