Skippers Fish Camp: Fresh Coastal Georgia Seafood

If you’re like many of us, chances are you’ve traversed the 110-some odd miles of I-95 spanning the South Carolina and Florida borders, without ever gaining a glimpse of the Georgia coast. Yet, the curious venturing off the interstate down a coastal road less traveled will discover small, once dead towns, scores of historic sites, folksy family-run restaurants, and public dock access to the Atlantic and barrier islands home only to wildlife.
If you find yourself driving along I-95 and become hungry, take exit 49 and head due east toward the coast. In about a mile, you’ll reach route 17. Turn right, and drive straight into the center of Darien about 1.5 miles down the road. Near the bridge on the river, you’ll see about 20 shrimp boats and a restaurant.

Skippers Fish Camp is a great little seafood restaurant tucked away alongside the river in Darien, Georgia that you’ll come to love. We’re back for the first time since our return from foreign travel and this place is even better than ever. My wife and I have eaten dinner here with friends on a dozen occasions over the past 10 years. The quality of food and service is always excellent.
One of their specialty dishes is the crispy flounder. It’s quite good. Like other entrees, it comes with two sides.
This time we tried the blackened scallops (very tasty), fresh caught Georgia Shrimp (huge!) and a surf and turf special. The pictures say it all!
On separate visits we tried the breaded oysters and scallop’s platter with collards and fried okra and the wild Georgia Shrimp blackened with the sweet potato soufflé and fried okra. The pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, Cole slaw, and sweet potato soufflé are very tasty.

In fact, Skippers offers a 5-pound bucket of fresh caught coastal Georgia shrimp for about $57.00. You can take it home with you after dinner. Or better yet, just stand around the piers when the shrimpers come in, and you can pick up 5, 10 or 20 pounds of shrimp to take home for 80% less than you’d pay at the store.
Coastal Georgia ShrimpThis place is a good pick for a traveler on a tight schedule. It’s quick stop off the interstate highway. You won’t face traffic congestion or parking problems. The setting is on a river and quaint.
Travelers note: The popularity of this place with the locals can cause waiting lines of up to 1.5 hours on Friday and Saturday night's. If you’re not in rush, stick around. Attached to the restaurant is a bar and a beautiful pier with a turtle swimming habitat. You can pass the time watching the shrimp boats. And if you are lucky, an alligator may pose for a picture! There is a cute bar there as well.
